Australia’s world-leading minerals industry promotes exciting, well-paid careers
Australian mining provides great opportunities to build a long and exciting career, with 240,000 people employed in highly paid, highly skilled jobs.
The modern mining industry is an exciting and dynamic sector with a diverse range of highly skilled and highly paid jobs. It is much more than big machines, hard hats and high vis.
Today’s launch of the More to Mining Careers Guide by the Minister for Industry, Science and Technology, the Hon Karen Andrews MP and Anglo American’s Metallurgical Coal CEO Tyler Mitchelson at the University of Queensland in Brisbane is another step in the industry’s promotion of the real world of modern Australian mining.
In particular, a strong cooperative effort by state and federal governments and the minerals industry will be crucial in increasing the number of apprentices across Australia.
The guide tells the stories of people working in the industry as well as providing information on the varied roles on offer – including drone pilot, environmental scientist, artificial intelligence developer and data analyst and geologist.
It also highlights the diversity of the industry – including women and Aboriginal Australians who have embraced the opportunities available – and promotes the different pathways into the industry.
The mining industry offers the highest average weekly earnings in Australia of $2,721 per week, 64 per cent higher than Australian average weekly earnings.
Mining is one of the most technologically advanced industries in Australia. Across the mining process – from exploration through to operations, processing, transport and trading – technology is transforming the way we mine. And it’s making mining safer, more competitive and more sustainable.
The More to Mining Careers Guide will be promoted to teachers, careers advisers, students and parents across Australia to show that there’s more to Australian mining.
