Australian minerals industry research scholarship winners announced

MCA congratulates the winners of the 2018 Australian Minerals Industry Research Scholarships that deliver real, tangible benefits to scientific research and future employment opportunities in the resources sector.

MCA provides scholarships for Ph.D. and post-doctoral researchers to enhance their study experience with the Australian minerals industry.

These prestigious scholarships facilitate research and training in areas of practical value to the Australian minerals industry, including the broad technical areas of mining engineering, geotechnical engineering, metallurgy, chemical engineering, minerals processing, minerals geoscience and environmental science, as well as in public policy.

This year’s winners:

• Mr Bradley Cave – University of Adelaide
• Mr Javier Merrill – University of Tasmania

The scholarship will fund Mr Cave’s extended field work for the second and third year of his Ph.D, which focuses on geology models and improvements in the classification of multi-commodity ore blocks at Mount Isa.   This project will enhance collaboration between the University of Adelaide and Mount Isa Mines.

Mr Merrill’s scholarship will support fieldwork and complementary rock characterisation analysis, including predicting mineral processing attributes of slurries.  This project will create a collaborative partnership between BHP, the University of Tasmania and Chuo Kaihatsu Corporation of Japan.

The students will receive up to $20,000 to assist in their research costs into the Australian minerals industry, which will enhance the skills and knowledge of our people in the resources sector.

This year 17 applications were received and the judges noted that all of the submissions put forward compelling research and collaborative opportunities between the Australian mining industry and the higher education sector.

These scholarships are another example of Australian mining investing in research and the next generation of mining innovators.
